Laser
Root Canals
Fast, Effective and Minimally Invasive
We believe in the use of Laser-assisted root canal treatment because it provides our patients with advanced and minimally invasive technology for treating infected or damaged tooth roots. In this treatment, we use laser technology to remove infected tissue, sanitize the root canal, and promote healing. This approach allows for a more precise removal of infected tissue, preserving more of the natural tooth structure, and providing our patients with a safer and less time-consuming root canal treatment.
How Laser Root Canal Treatment Works
With a traditional root canal treatment, the endodontist makes use of a drill to create a tiny opening in the tooth to be treated. Once this is complete, they remove the inflamed damaged pulp and then the root within the tooth is cleansed and disinfected before the little hole is filled back up again with a rubber-like solution.
The laser root canal treatment we perform is very similar, with the key difference being that instead of a drill, we use a laser. The laser can “boil away” the damaged pulp with far greater accuracy and speed and the tooth is left considerably cleaner. There is also often less bleeding involved – a plus for anyone because no one really likes to see blood, especially their own! Our patients that have had a root canal in the past and then have laser treatment have commented that the pain and discomfort they experienced immediately after their dental procedure was noticeably less.

In our office we use the Fotona Laser for this procedure which uses two complementary laser technologies:
- Super Short Pulse (SSP) irrigation to clean the root canal and sub-canals; and
- Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photo-acoustic Streaming (SWEEPS) which improves the irrigation and disinfecting effectiveness. This provides a pair of ultra-short pulses which allows it to access and clean even the narrowest of root canals.
We like using the Fotona for this procedure because it is very easy to maneuver the laser emitting fiber tip within the pulp chamber in a unique and highly effective approach for modern endodontics and we think our patients agree!

FAQs – Laser Root Canal Treatment
Q:
Q: What is laser root canal treatment?
A: Laser-assisted root canal treatment is an advanced, minimally invasive way to treat infected or damaged tooth roots. Instead of relying on drills alone, we use laser technology to:
- Remove infected tissue with precision
- Sanitize the root canal system
- Preserve more natural tooth structure
- Promote faster healing with less discomfort
Q: How is it different from a traditional root canal?
A: Both treatments remove inflamed pulp and clean the inside of the tooth. The main difference is:
- Traditional root canal: Uses drills to open and clean the canal.
- Laser root canal: Uses a laser to “boil away” damaged pulp, clean canals more thoroughly, and reduce bleeding.
Many patients report less post-procedure pain and faster recovery compared to conventional root canals.
Q: What technology do you use for laser root canals?
A: In our office, we use the Fotona Laser, which combines two advanced technologies:
- Super Short Pulse (SSP) irrigation which cleans the root canal and tiny sub-canals.
- SWEEPS® (Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photo-acoustic Streaming) which improves irrigation and disinfection with ultra-short laser pulses that reach even the narrowest canals.
This allows us to deliver a cleaner, safer, and more effective root canal procedure.
Q: What are the main benefits of laser root canal treatment?
A: The main benefits of laser root canal are the following:
- More precise and thorough cleaning
- Preserves natural tooth structure
- Less bleeding and swelling
- Reduced post-treatment pain
- Shorter procedure time compared to traditional methods
Q: Is laser root canal treatment safe?
A: Yes. The Fotona laser is designed specifically for modern endodontics and is highly safe and effective when used by our specialists. Our patients appreciate the comfort and peace of mind this technology provides.
