Prolotherapy
What is Prolotherapy?
Dentistry by Dr. David, The Bolton Center for Dental Wellness, have been using prolotherapy with our patients for over a decade because it helps to treat temporomandibular disorders also known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
In dentistry, prolotherapy can be used to treat temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which can cause pain and restricted movement in the jaw. For patients with TMJ, prolotherapy can help strengthen ligaments and tendons and reduce inflammation, leading to improved function and decreased pain.
How is Prolotherapy Done?
We inject a substance into our patient’s affected ligaments or tendons. By design, this will cause some inflammation in the tissue, but this injection and the inflammation it causes, stimulate the body’s own healing process to produce new tissue that can strengthen the damaged ligaments and tendons that are causing the issue for our patients.
Prolotherapy Benefits
The benefits of prolotherapy can include:
Pain relief: Prolotherapy can help to alleviate pain associated with TMJ dysfunction and other dental conditions by promoting healing.
Improved function: By strengthening the ligaments and tissues surrounding the TMJ, prolotherapy can improve a patients’ jaw function and range of motion.
Non-surgical option: Many of our patients opt for prolotherapy because it is a minimally invasive treatment option that can be used as an alternative to surgery for certain dental conditions.
Reduced reliance on medications: Patients who are concerned about being too reliant on medications to alleviate their pain like that prolotherapy can reduce the need for pain medications and other medications used to manage dental pain.
How Many Prolotherapy Treatments Do I Need?
It has been our experience at Dentistry by Dr. David, The Bolton Center for Dental Wellness, that the time required to complete a prolotherapy treatment cycle can vary depending on the specific condition being treated and each individual patient. Typically, a course of treatment involves multiple injections spaced out over several weeks or months that are applied to the same area each time. Patients undergoing this treatment, generally may require four to six treatments to gain the full benefit and we will work with you to map out a schedule to accomplish this goal and accommodate your schedule.
When Will I Start to Feel Pain Relief?
Patients may start to experience relief after the first few injections, but full benefits may take several weeks or months to fully manifest.
