What to Expect at Your
First Holistic Dental Appointment

Holistic dentistry looks at the bigger picture. We do not just care for your teeth and gums, we care for you as a whole person, recognizing how closely your smile and your overall health are linked.

That is why a first visit here looks different from what you may be used to. Instead of a quick look and a cleaning, we set aside real time to learn how you got to where you are, what you want your mouth to do for you, and how your dental health fits into the rest of your life. You can read more about our approach to biological and holistic dentistry.

    Before Your Visit

Before your appointment, we will email you medical and dental history forms to fill out electronically, so that we can properly prepare for your visit.

Completing these in advance matters more than it might seem. It means your appointment time goes to the conversation and the examination rather than to paperwork, and it gives us a chance to review your history before you arrive. You can also find everything on our patient forms page.

    Our Adult New Patient Exam

Given our whole body approach, it is imperative that we invest the time to understand your dental goals and your current approach to your overall health.

Our new patient appointment is designed to accomplish these two goals and to create a partnership built on trust, communication, and a shared commitment to your long term oral health.

Your new patient appointment will last approximately two hours and may include the following:

    • A complete review of your health and dental history
    • A visual examination of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues
    • Any necessary dental X-rays
    • Evaluation and explanation of your X-ray results
    • Periodontal charting to assess gum health
    • Oral cancer screening
    • A comprehensive dental examination
    • Photos for documentation and education
    • Use of advanced diagnostic tools, such as an intraoral camera or microscope, if applicable

Why There Is No Cleaning at Your First Visit

A dental cleaning will not be performed during your first new patient appointment. After we complete a comprehensive exam and assess your oral health, we will schedule a hygiene visit that meets your individual needs.

Cleanings are not one size fits all. The type of hygiene appointment you need, and how long it should take, depends on what the examination actually finds. Scheduling it afterward means your hygiene visit is built around your gums and your history rather than a standard time slot.

    Reviewing Our Findings Together

Following your exam, we will review our findings with you and discuss any treatment recommendations based on this discussion and the questionnaire that we ask you to fill out in advance.

You should leave knowing what we saw, what needs attention now, what can simply be watched, and what your options are. Nothing gets decided for you. This conversation is where the partnership starts.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a holistic dentist different?

We look at the bigger picture. Instead of just focusing on your teeth and gums, we take a whole body approach to oral care. We recognize how closely your smile and your overall health are connected, treating you as a complete person rather than focusing on isolated dental issues.

How do I prepare for my first appointment?

Before your visit, we will email you medical and dental history forms to fill out electronically. Completing these in advance helps us prepare thoroughly for your visit and ensures we understand your current health and your dental goals.

What should I expect during the Adult New Patient Exam?

Because we invest the time to understand your unique health picture, your first appointment will last approximately two hours. Your visit includes a complete review of your health and dental history, a comprehensive visual exam of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues, dental X-rays with an in depth evaluation of your results, periodontal charting, an oral cancer screening, intraoral photos and advanced diagnostic tools, and a dedicated discussion of our findings and customized recommendations.

Will I get a dental cleaning during my first visit?

No, a cleaning is not performed during the initial new patient appointment. We use this first visit to complete a thorough comprehensive exam and assess your unique oral health status. Afterward, we will schedule a tailored hygiene visit designed specifically for your individual needs.

Why does the first visit take two hours?

We believe exceptional care starts with trust and clear communication. Dedicating two full hours allows us to do a deep dive into your oral health, discuss your overall wellness goals, and build a lasting partnership for your long term health without rushing.
